At Readify we are very lucky to have a technical population of users who can build their own laptops, connect themselves to the corporate network over VPN and generally diagnose their own technical problems.
When I try to promote the concept of remote working people often catch me out by suggesting that not everyone can support themselves from a technical point of view. This is absolutely true, there are some people, in fact I would say the majority that need more help getting set up to work remotely.
Despite this I still think it is possible. Many people are capable of going out, purchasing their own computer and with a minimum amount of fuss getting it connected to the Internet. I would imagine that a company supplied laptop which is all pre-configured would be even easier to get going assuming it had a fairly standard configuration. When it comes to face-to-face technical support you can still go into the office to see a technical and just work from there for the day, alternatively the technician could visit the user if they wanted to work remotely as well.
We know this can be done because there are already armies of roving sales teams which never come into the office which are quite productive and have Internet access. It once again comes back to desire.

The argument of technical support is actually a new one on me; fortunately I’ve not had people making that suggestion - because you’re quite right; it’s entirely possible and legions of sales people and other non-technical direct line-of-business employees do this every day.
To be honest, if someone suggested a particular individual could not work remotely because they had technical support issues then I’d question why this is expected to be such a major issue. After all, the implication is that they would need masses of technical support in the office, too. Why would working remotely require such significantly greater technical support that is an issue? If someone is so dependent on having support on tap I’d wonder how productive they are no matter where they are working.
