Etiquette and lifestyle rules for remote working.

April 4th, 2008 · No Comments · General

Remote working sounds like a lot of fun, however what are some of the rules to live by when you manage to score this kind of working arrangement? It is very easy to slide into unhealthy working habits such as not giving a full days work or the complete opposite of not being able to switch off.

I thought that I might throw out a few conversation starters:

  • Get out of bed, shower, and shave; it might sound silly but if you start working from home it is easy to slip into a habit where you don’t climb out of bed until much later in the day. It is important to understand when you work day starts (if you are nocturnal that is fine, just communicate that fact to the rest of your team and make sure it works for them too).
  • Establish some routines; I like to go to a cafe in the morning to read my e-mail and catch up with some blog reading. It can actually be hard to do this if you are a bit of a road warrior but when I do it I have a much better day.
  • Schedule your time; block out times of the day when you are working on things. For example if you have to work on a report schedule that time in advance and time box it, it is very easy to waste an entire day reading e-mail when you have no one around to break you away from your inbox.

What are some of the rules that you live by?
