Today is the end of the first full day up here at Byron Bay as part of The Ultimate Escape. At about 5pm I joined a weekly teleconference to catch up on the state service delivery across the Readify business. It had been a fairly busy day with a few stresses so I decided to stroll around the deck outside and eventually sat down to watch the sun set.
Personally I think one of the benefits of remote working is that you can pick the scene in which you are going to work, that could be in a cafe, it could be at home but what some people forget is that you can mix it up a bit. Got a meeting at the same time every week? Find a location that is going to put you into a mood and add it to your routine.
Make sure that you have the information you require available to you during the meeting. In my case I was able to be connected to the Internet and on the conference call all through my 9502. Being connected to the Internet at the same time meant I could look up the internal CRM system and the intranet during the call.
Since I was in a bit of a reflective mood so I wanted to be outside and by the time the call ended I was chilled out enough that I was able to doodle the picture you see above.
The meeting was useful and I had a nice banner for my post tonight. I think remote working is the future ![]()

So sorry to read that you think ‘remote working is the future’! Would have loved to read it is NOW.
When checking the internet while on your conference call, were you using a bluetooth headset or a wired one?

Hi Peter,
The future = now + 1 second so, I guess the future is now
Or now, or now
I personally prefer the wired headsets. It makes me feel like the dude from the Bourne Identity. All I am missing now is the elite ninja skills

I think there are a number of compelling reasons to work remotely (or just not at the office), but there’s one that has been playing on my mind quite a lot recently. When I talk to others who have children, and as I think about how I would like to work (if and ) when I have children, is the flexibiltity that working remotely provides for family.
When you don’t have to travel into a traditional office, you can spend more time in those important formative years of your childrens lives. It allows you the flexibility to go to special school events, be there for them when they’re not well etc… This is becomming more and more important as financial pressures force both primary carers into the workforce.
Even if you don’t have children, the ability to spend more quality time with your partner or your friends makes life that much better.

Mitch, love the doodle - having all this spare time to engage in such artistic pursuits is surely reason enough for my General Manager to let me work remotely full time? lol…
